Alabama sets a roofing-specific licensing threshold of $2,500 — lower than the $10,000 trigger for residential construction generally — which means essentially every roofing job needs a licensed contractor. Huntsville also sits in one of the more tornado-prone corridors in the country, where April 2011 remains the local benchmark. This page lists roofers serving Huntsville.
What Huntsville roofers handle
Tornado, wind and hail damage, with the insurance process that follows.
Structural and decking repair after wind events, distinct from re-covering.
Full replacement on asphalt shingle, the dominant covering.
Impact-resistant upgrades on hail-exposed stock.
Ventilation work, a moisture control in this humidity.
Decking replacement exposed at tear-off.
Licensing in Alabama
Alabama sets a roofing-specific threshold of $2,500 — lower than its general residential threshold.
The Home Builders Licensure Board (HBLB) requires a residential contractor licence where a project exceeds $10,000, but for roofing work the trigger is $2,500. That covers essentially every real roof job.
There is a distinction worth knowing:
- An unlimited home builder licence permits residential roofing without a separate roofer’s licence
- A limited home builder licence requires the holder to obtain a roofer’s licence as well
Roofer-specific licensees must post a $10,000 licence bond naming the Homebuilders Licensure Board as obligee. Ask which licence the contractor holds — the two are not equivalent.
What’s specific to Huntsville
Ask which licence they hold. Alabama’s Home Builders Licensure Board issues two relevant credentials: an unlimited home builder licence permits residential roofing without a separate roofer’s licence, while a limited licence requires the holder to obtain a roofer’s licence as well. Roofer-specific licensees post a $10,000 bond naming the Board as obligee. The two are not equivalent, so ask.
Tornado risk is severe here. North Alabama sits in a corridor that produces violent tornadoes, and the April 2011 outbreak remains the reference point across the region. Tornado damage is structural — framing, decking and attachment — and quoting it as a covering replacement misses the point.
Rapid growth from the aerospace and defence sector. Huntsville has expanded quickly, producing large tracts of newer housing alongside older neighbourhoods, and drawing contractors from outside the area.
Humidity works on decking. Warm wet summers plus under-ventilated attics degrade decking beneath coverings that still look sound.
Hail arrives with the same storm systems that bring the tornado risk, and insurance-funded replacement is common.
Pricing expectations
Huntsville figures for 2026, as published by local roofing companies:
- Most Huntsville replacements come in at $13,500–$24,000 all-in. Two worked examples from the same company: a 22-square Five Points bungalow at $13,500, a 28-square Blossomwood traditional at $15,800
- Priced by pitch, per square, architectural shingles with tear-off included: flat to walkable (0/12–6/12) $400; 7/12–9/12 $455; 10/12–12/12 $470; above 12/12 $485 — surcharges of +$55, +$70 and +$85 over the base
- A steep mountainside access adder of $500–$900 where a dump trailer cannot reach the eaves — Monte Sano, Hampton Cove and McMullen Cove are named
- The extras: decking $145–$175 per square depending on pitch; removing a second layer $1,500–$3,500; a Class 4 impact-resistant upgrade $80–$120 per square. Permit, dump fees and mobilisation are stated as included in the base rate
- By roof size, another local guide: 10 squares $6,000–$8,500; 15 $9,000–$12,750; 20 $12,000–$17,000; 25 $15,000–$21,250; 30 $18,000–$25,500; 35 $21,000–$29,750 — around $600–$850 per square
- North Alabama for comparison: most single-family homes $8,500–$25,000+; three-tab $350–$500 per square ($8,500–$12,000 total); architectural $400–$650 ($10,000–$16,000); standing seam $700–$1,200 ($17,000–$28,000); tile or slate $1,000–$2,000+ ($25,000–$45,000+)
Huntsville is the only city on this site where a contractor publishes a price ladder by roof pitch rather than a single per-square rate, and it is the most honest pricing structure found anywhere in this research: $400 a square on a walkable roof rising to $485 above 12/12, with every step printed. The $500–$900 mountainside access adder is the same idea — a real local cost produced by real local terrain, where the lot will not take a dump trailer to the eaves. Two other things drive money here. Alabama allows a maximum of two layers of asphalt shingles, and a house re-roofed over the original covering in the 1990s or 2000s is now at that limit, facing a double tear-off at $1,500–$3,500. And the weather: golf-ball hail across parts of Madison County in April 2023 and again over Hampton Cove in May 2024, in a region sitting at the eastern edge of tornado alley. On code, drip edge is required at eaves and rakes under IRC R905.2.8.5, and permits are required for full replacements across Huntsville and Madison County. One claim to set aside: a local page states valley ice-and-water shield is required by Alabama code, but the IRC conditions the ice barrier on an average January temperature of 25°F or below, and Huntsville sits above that. It is good practice here, not a requirement.
These are ranges local roofing companies publish for this metro rather than survey data, so treat them as a bracket to check a quote against, not a price list.
Two contract items: which pitch band your roof falls in, since the per-square rate is set by it, and how many layers are on the roof, given Alabama’s two-layer maximum and the double tear-off cost.

How this directory helps
Every roofer here is listed with business name, address and phone so you can verify them yourself.
Three questions sort Huntsville contractors. Ask which HBLB licence they hold — unlimited builder, or limited plus a roofer’s licence. After storm damage, ask whether structural and decking repair are quoted separately. And confirm the job is above the $2,500 threshold, which it almost certainly is.
